The Wacky Races was an animated show. It began in 1968 and ended at the beginning of 1969, with the production of 17 episodes. The show was based around 11 different racers that would race on different courses in hopes of winning and being titled the "World's Wackiest Racer".
Dick Dastardly was one of the racers within this show, and he drove the Mean Machine. He was a mischievous character that loved to cause trouble. He would get away from the starting line far ahead of the rest of the group but would always have to stop and set traps for the others that would end up getting him in the end.
Penelope Pitstop was another one of the racers in the show, and she drove the Compact Pussycat. She was the only female driver which worked in her favor. The other drivers did not try and pull tricks on her to prohibit her from winning, there were even times that they would let her pass them. Her race car had everything that a women needed and more. It was like a beauty parlor on wheels.
The Dick Dastardly costume is a long purple trench coat with black pants and boats, along with red gloves and a red and purple hat with goggles. He also had a long mustache that stuck out rather than drooped down. The Penelope Pitstop costume is a pretty bright pink dress with maroon leggings, a red hat with goggles, white go-go boots and white gloves.
Even though the Wacky Races show was televised many years ago, the Dick Dastardly costume and Penelope Pitstop costume is extremely popular yet today. But why are their costumes so popular still? Although the episodes are from years ago, they are replayed on cartoon stations from time to time, so it is not unlikely that the children of today have seen them, which would give them some popularity within children.
The Dick Dastardly costume is popular due to who his character was. He was the villain, the bad guy that always had to try and win by means that were not right. Many people enjoy dressing in those types of costumes and being able to play out those parts. You may be the nicest person, but dressing in this costume gives you the feel of being the bad guy, if only for one night.
The Penelope Pitstop costume is popular with the ladies for a couple of reasons. The first would be the look of the costume. As long as you like pink, it is an extremely attractive outfit. The other is the fact that she was a race car driver. It is not all that common, in real life or cartoons, that a women would be a race car driver. With her being a driver, it is something that women can wear and image what it would be like to drive a race car.
The Wacky Races series was created and televised years ago, but who's to say they shouldn't remain popular today.
